The Vector Signal Generator R&S SMV03 is based on the successful analog Signal Generator family of Rohde & Schwarz. It comprises an additional broadband I/Q modulator which is able to generate any digital signal in conjunction with an external I/Q source. The Vector Signal Generator R&S SMV03 is, therefore, a way of entering the wide field of automatic test systems as well as gaining access to applications like R&D and service. When used together with the R&S AMIQ and R&S WinIQSIM, the R&S SMV03 can generate digital signals that meet any requirement.
The R&S SMV03 generates all kinds of I/Q modulated signals using the integrated vector modulator. Thanks to its wide I/Q bandwidth of 50 MHz, the Vector Signal Generator is also optimally suited for applications using high data rates such as WLAN standards. Signals to digital standards can be easily generated in conjunction with an external I/Q source like the Modulation Generator R&S AMIQ and the associated R&S WinIQSIM simulation software. The R&S SMV03 therefore optimally meets production environment requirements.
The Vector Signal Generator has plenty of power in reserve so level loss produced by the test setup can be easily compensated. Also its high level accuracy makes it ideal for use in larger test setups: Measurement uncertainty can be split into the contribution from the instrument and that introduced from the test setup. With a smaller uncertainty of the generator, greater tolerances can be allowed for the test setup. If the small level deviation of the analyzer is used to allow for higher DUT tolerances, the result will be a marked reduction in manufacturing rejects - an advantage that pays off immediately.
Due to the synthesizer concept the setting times are very low. This is an important feature which makes it ideal for the use in production where speed is of prime importance. And this is exactly one of the strong points of the R&S SMV03, with a setting time lower than 12 ms when IQ modulation is switched on. Without IQ modulation the value is with 10 ms even lower.
