80C04 Optical Sampling Module with Option CR2
The new Option CR2 (Dual-Rate Clock Recovery) for the 80C04 optical sampling module extends the clock recovery functionality of the module. With Option CR2, it is now possible to extract embedded clock information from OC-192/STM-64 signals at either of two clock rates: 9.953 Gb/s (gigabits per second) or 10.664 Gb/s. The standard OC-192/STM-64 data rate is 9.953 Gb/s, while the higher 10.664 Gb/s rate supports out-of-band forward error correction (FEC) as specified by the ITU-T G.975 standard.
As bit rates continue to increase, the achievable bit error rates have begun to decline. While the OC-192/STM64 protocols have error checking capabilities, if errors are detected, correction requires retransmission of the eroded data packets. FEC enables automatic correction of many errors at the receiver thus minimizing the requirement to retransmit data. The FEC specified by the ITU-T G.975 standard includes an additional 7% overhead, resulting in a 10.664 Gb/s transmission rate.
The 80C04 provides optical reference receivers for both 9.953 Gb/s and 10.664 Gb/s, one for each clock rate described above. The module's 28 GHz optical bandwidth equips it well for general-purpose optical signal analysis in addition to its OC-192/STM-64 capabilities. The 80C04 is designed to support network equipment makers in their sustaining work on 10 Gb/s OC-192/STM-64 components and transmission systems.
